Should You Shop at Outlet Malls? What You Need to Know About Clothing Quality

Shopping at outlet malls can feel like a bargain-hunter’s dream — designer names, steep discounts, racks and racks of clothing.

But if you’ve ever wondered: “Is this the same quality I’d get at their regular store?” — you’re asking a smart question.

And the answer is: not always.

As a stylist who works with women navigating body changes, life transitions, and evolving style needs, I want you to shop with confidence — and without surprises.

Here’s what you need to know about outlet shopping, clothing quality, and how to decide what’s worth bringing home.

1️⃣ What’s really in outlet stores?

Outlet stores are a mix of two kinds of products:

  • Past-season clearance from regular retail stores → often higher quality, made for the main line
  • Factory-made clothing → designed specifically for outlet stores, often labeled as “Factory” or similar

That second category is important. Many brands produce clothing specifically for outlet stores — and while the price is lower, the quality often is too.

Fabric may be thinner.

Seams may be less finished.

Details may be simplified.

This isn’t a bad thing — as long as you know what you’re buying.

2️⃣ How can you tell the difference?

Look for clues:

  • Tags or labels that say “Factory” or “Outlet” — these pieces were made for the outlet, not the main store.
  • Fabric feel → does it feel substantial, soft, or flimsy?
  • Construction → check seams, stitching, buttons, zippers.
  • Original pricing → if the tag shows an outlet-only price (not a markdown from a higher original price), it’s likely an outlet-produced piece.

When in doubt — trust your hands. How does the piece feel compared to what you’ve tried on in regular stores?

3️⃣ Are outlet pieces worth buying?

Sometimes — it depends on your needs.

Outlet-made clothing can be great for:

  • Casual basics
  • Trying new colors or silhouettes without a big investment
  • One-season wear pieces

But if you want pieces that will last multiple seasons, it’s often better to invest in higher-quality garments — from regular lines, consignment stores, or brands known for consistent quality.

4️⃣ Tips for smart outlet shopping

  • Go in with a plan. Know what you’re looking for so you’re not swayed by discounts alone.
  • Touch everything. If it doesn’t feel good in your hands, it won’t feel good on your body.
  • Check construction. Look inside the garment — seams tell the story.
  • Consider how long you want it to last. For wear-it-once fun, outlet can be fine. For wardrobe staples, shop carefully.

One More Thing:

Outlet shopping isn’t good or bad — it’s about knowing what you’re buying and shopping with intention.

Some outlet pieces will serve you well. Others won’t hold up — and knowing how to spot the difference is key.
