Packing Cubes: Why I Use Them (and When They Actually Help)
Packing shouldn’t feel harder than the trip itself.
Over the years, I’ve tried just about every travel “hack” out there. Some work beautifully. Others look great online and fall apart in real life.
Packing cubes fall into the actually helpful category — when they’re used for the right reason.
This post isn’t about squeezing more into your suitcase. It’s about staying organized, calm, and in control while you travel.
Why I Use Packing Cubes
Packing cubes don’t make your suitcase lighter. And they’re not meant to.
What they do is keep everything contained and easy to manage.
When I use packing cubes:
- I know exactly where everything is
- I don’t have to unpack into hotel drawers
- I can repack in minutes instead of chaos
- I don’t end up digging for socks at the bottom of my bag
That alone makes travel feel easier.

They’re Especially Helpful When…
Packing cubes shine in a few specific situations.
They’re great when:
- You’re traveling for more than a few days
- You’re moving between locations
- You don’t want your clothes touching shared drawers
- You like a sense of order, even on vacation
I also use them when I travel with my grandsons. We each have our own set, which keeps everyone’s clothes separate and avoids the “whose shirt is this?” conversation.
Simple systems matter.
What Packing Cubes Are Not
Packing cubes are not:
- A way to pack more than you should
- A magic solution for heavy suitcases
- A substitute for editing your wardrobe
They support good packing habits. They don’t fix overpacking.
If you tend to pack “just in case” outfits, cubes won’t stop that. They’ll just make it neater.
Packing Cubes vs. Vacuum Bags
This is where people get confused.
Packing cubes organize.
Vacuum bags compress.
Compression can be useful in some cases, but it often leads to heavier bags and harder lifting. If you missed it, I wrote more about that here:

The key is knowing which tool solves which problem.
A Smarter Way to Pack
For most trips, I recommend this approach:
- Edit your outfits first
- Choose versatile pieces
- Use packing cubes to group items
- Keep things visible and accessible
Packing feels calmer when you can see what you packed — and why.
Travel should feel lighter, not more complicated.
