The Coat That Helped Change My Mind About Clothing Sizes
Why fit matters more than the number on the tag
If you’ve ever loved how something looked on your body — and then talked yourself out of buying it because of the size on the tag — this story is for you.
A couple of years ago, I went shopping for something very specific: a tan wool coat. The classic kind. Polished. Warm. The kind that works with jeans and boots just as well as it does over a dress.
I didn’t expect to find it so easily, but I did.
It was a designer I love. It was on sale. And when I put it on, it fit beautifully.
I felt great.
Until I looked at the tag.
Size 14.
And in that moment, the coat didn’t change — but my thinking did.
I remember thinking, Wait… when did this happen? I had always thought of myself as a 10. Maybe even a 12. But a 14 in a coat? That wasn’t the story I had in my head about myself.
Almost immediately, the old thoughts kicked in. The ones many of us know too well.
You’re slipping.
You used to be smaller.
Do you really want to buy that size?
And just like that, all the excitement drained out of the moment.
I took the coat off. Hung it back up. Got on the escalator and headed down to the main floor, trying to convince myself it wasn’t a big deal.
But the whole ride down, I couldn’t stop thinking about that coat.
How good it looked.
How right it felt.
How hard it is to find something that checks all the boxes — your style, your body, your budget — especially at this stage of life.
By the time I stepped off the escalator, something shifted.
I thought, Who is this for, anyway?
Because in all my years — and there have been plenty — not one person has ever asked me what size my coat is.
They ask where I got it.
They tell me it looks great.
They notice how put-together I look.
So I went back up.
And I bought the coat.
Not because of the number on the tag.
But because it fit me.
And because it felt like me.
Why That Number Has So Much Power
If you’ve ever walked away from something you loved because the size was higher than you expected, you’re not alone. I’ve done it too — clearly.
That number can carry a lot of emotional weight. It brings up old ideas about who we were supposed to be, or who we thought we were. But here’s the truth we don’t hear often enough:
That number doesn’t measure your worth.
It doesn’t define your beauty.
And it doesn’t tell the story of your life.
It’s just a label sewn into a garment by a brand with its own sizing system — one that often changes from style to style and year to year.
Bodies Change. Style Doesn’t Disappear.
Our bodies shift for all kinds of reasons. Hormones. Menopause. Stress. Healing. Life. None of that is failure. It’s being human.
What matters isn’t the size you think you should be. What matters is how your clothes fit your body now.
When something fits well, you feel it immediately. You move differently. You stop adjusting and tugging. You feel more at ease in your own skin. And that confidence is what people notice — not the tag inside your coat.
The Real Takeaway
If you’re standing in a dressing room and something fits beautifully, feels comfortable, and makes you feel like yourself again — that’s your answer.
The number doesn’t get a vote.
You deserve clothes that fit the life you’re living now, not the one you used to have or the one you think you’re supposed to have.
And if you ever find yourself hesitating over a tag the way I did, I hope you remember this story.
Next time, buy the coat.

A question to sit with
Have you ever talked yourself out of something that fit and flattered you because of the number on the tag?
If so, you’re in very good company.

Love this Cindy!
I struggled with this a few times and went home and cut the size tag off! 🥰
Lori, thanks for taking time to respond.
Yes, it doesn’t happen often and for some reason that time it really hit me — “you’re going to pass on a coat you LOVE because of the size tag??” I have not walked away from an item due to sizing since then. It was life changing for me. ❤️
This really rings true. And I’ve beat myself up over it too. It’s crazy how those numbers mess with our heads and our self worth. As if anyone is going to know what size it is and judge. Thanks for this. And the coat is beautiful!
Hi Gina— I appreciate you taking the time to read my post and even more for taking the time to respond. I have walked away from a few things based on the darn tag and regretted it for sure. I’m glad I caught myself with the coat.
I think clothing manufacturers don’t even think about how wrapped up our heads are in those tags. Especially when you see how varied the sizes can be across brands and sometimes even within brands. I am willing to guess men’s sizing is more stable! 😏
Love this! What a great message to share! Thank you for empowering all women to feel beautiful and comfortable in their own skin!
Hi Shari, So kind of you to take time to read and respond. Yes, so much wasted time fretting over tags! If it feels & looks good, and fits our style, we should wear it!
Thanks again!
I had a nice surprise recently when I went down a size in a shirt. It was an oversized shirt but I still took the win.
Hi Kym, sounds like a lovely surprise. Were you working out or was this out of the blue?
Either way— it’s a win! 💕
I love this story. It’s so true, I’ve done this before as well. And that coat looks amazing on you.
